Abstract

The theory-practice gap in mastering therapeutic communication remains a major challenge in midwifery education. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of Standardized Patient Simulation (SPS) learning methods in enhancing therapeutic communication skills, self-efficacy, and empathy among midwifery students. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted. The study subjects consisted of 48 third-semester midwifery students enrolled in the Communication in Midwifery Practice course. The intervention comprised interactive clinical scenarios utilizing trained standardized patients combined with structured debriefing sessions. Assessments were administered pre- and post-intervention using the Health Communication Assessment Tool (HCAT) observation checklist and the Self-Efficacy in Therapeutic Communication questionnaire. Data were comparatively analyzed using paired sample t-tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Results demonstrated a significant increase in the mean therapeutic communication score from  (pre-test) to  (post-test) with . The highest score gains were observed in active listening, non-verbal empathy expression, and managing patient anxiety/critical scenarios. SPS proved highly effective in transforming students' interpersonal competencies and bridging the theory-practice gap prior to clinical placement.
