Abstract

This study aims to explore students' lived experiences in using digital media for English listening skill development. The research is motivated by the increasing integration of digital technology in language learning and the limited qualitative understanding of how students experience, perceive, and develop strategies in digital media assisted listening learning. This study employed a descriptive phenomenological approach involving five students from the English Language Education Study Program at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta as participants. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews and journal reflections over one academic semester. Data analysis followed Colaizzi's phenomenological procedure consisting of seven systematic steps. The findings revealed five major themes: digital media as accessible learning resources, experiential learning through digital engagement, perceived benefits of digital media utilization, challenges and limitations in digital listening practice, and strategic development in digital learning environments. The findings demonstrate that students develop digital strategy repertoires encompassing cognitive, metacognitive, and social strategies. Digital media proved to enhance learner autonomy, motivation, and self confidence, although challenges such as the absence of immediate feedback and limited interaction remain significant constraints. This study concludes that strategic use of digital media supported by appropriate pedagogical guidance can significantly enhance listening skill development in English as a Foreign Language contexts.
